Passport Program

Venture off the trails of the Ohio & Erie Canalway to engage with historical and cultural venues located within the National Heritage Area.

Beyond the Trail

While you may know the Ohio & Erie Canalway first by the Towpath Trail, our footprint reaches far beyond that. In fact, each year, more than 22 million visitors find their way to venues of culture, history, recreation and nature within our footprint, and all with roots to canalway history. As a National Heritage Area, we now offer visitors the opportunity to explore these venues across our regions with the National Park Service (NPS) Passport Program.

Did You Know?

We’re also an affiliated unit of the National Park Service and work in partnership with Cuyahoga Valley National Park. These wonderful connections allow us to expand NPS programs, like the Passport Program, into our 110-mile footprint.

We work with our iconic partner sites to act as official Ohio & Erie Canalway NPS Passport stops. Each site is connected to the canalway story, and some of these locations may surprise you. All passport stamps are available free of charge at each venue — you don't need to pay to receive your stamp. However, heading into the venue can be fun too!

How It Works

Collecting passport stamps in the program simply requires a visit to the partner sites. Typically located by the visitor desk, the stamp will be easily accessible to gain an impression. No entry fee needs to be paid to obtain the stamp impression.

They are simple stamps with an indelible meaning — you're seeing those places of culture, history, recreation and nature that play a key part in our past and present; places that help shape who we are today and often add to the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

How to Collect Your Passport Stamps

Many people like to put their stamps into an official NPS Passport Stamp Book. These are available for sale at many of our partner sites for $9.95. Or, you can simply collect the stamps on pieces of paper and create your own memory book. Either way, we hope you have a wonderful time finding adventures in the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area!

Show Your Passport Pride!

We encourage you to share your adventure by posting a photo in front of the venue or with your stamp using the hashtags #FindYourAdventure and #OECanalway.
